Maureen Burgess is the Middle School Division Head and K-12 Dean of Teaching and Learning at The Hewitt School, an independent girls school on the upper east side of Manhattan. In 2011, she founded the Center for Teaching and Learning through Writing (CTLW) at Hewitt, which focuses on writing to learn across the curriculum. A middle, upper, and post-secondary instructor for over twenty years, Maureen now partners with middle and upper school faculty on integrating writing to learn practices into their lessons. This summer, Hewitt began a partnership with BARD IWT to expand teachers’ understanding and use of writing to learn practices in the context of its specific mission as a girls school. Maureen earned her B.A. at Fairfield University and her M.A. and Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. A writer of short stories and memoir, Maureen also is an assistant editor for fiction at Narrative Magazine.
